The New Zealand Cat Fancy

New Zealand Cat Fancy is the registry of choice for the cat lovers of New Zealand. With thirty five affiliated cat clubs holding more than forty five shows a year we cover the whole of the North and South Islands and provide for the needs of Breeders, Exhibitors and Pet Owners throughout the nation.

Our Objects are: To promote, foster, encourage, improve and assist in every way the breeding of cats registered with the NZCF.

History

The New Zealand Governing Council of the Cat Fancy held its first recorded meeting on Sept 4th 1930. In 1972 it was replaced by the New Zealand Cat Fancy which was formed as an affiliation of cat clubs, each having regional representation. In 2001 we chose a new modern constitution that retains the affiliates and gives direct membership to individuals.

Administration

The administration of the New Zealand Cat Fancy is vested in the hands of six elected Councillors, one of whom is the Executive Chairman and leader of the organisation. Councillors hold portfolios in specialized areas of Registration, Shows, Judges, Publications, Breed Standards, Finance, Administration, Information Technology. Officers and Officials work in an honorary capacity. We have liaison personnel that connect us to community organisations with whom we share a common interest.

Philosophy

The New Zealand Cat Fancy has a liberal philosophy. Our Breed Standards Council aims to keep the treasures of the past intact while encouraging creativity and new ventures. Because we are geographically isolated in the southern Pacific Ocean we have developed a tradition of "Do-it-Yourself". The importation of cats from all over the world is supplemented by a keen interest in developing new colours and increasing the gene pool of uncommon breeds. We recognize twelve breeds of longhair and twenty breeds of shorthair cats.

Members

Our members are proud of their organisation. Many have been with us a long time and have made a personal contribution to the Fancy as we know it. New members find camaraderie and support within our clubs.

The New Zealand cat world is a wonderful place. The New Zealand Cat Fancy takes it place as a mature member of the international cat scene.
